So I’m coming around to the reality Of just what went down from the passenger seat I’m hearing you now, a bit of clarity So I’m gonna skip out, yeah I guess that’s it Have you said what you needed to? You could have stayed if you wanted to Don’t remember the drive but remember the wheel It’s a bit like we were, only half on our heels I hope you’re feeling happier cause you said you weren’t that I guess I could be happier, I got a future to look at Have you said what you needed to? You could have stayed if you wanted to If you wanted to It’s just a turning of the tide It’s just a turning of the tide It’s just a turning of the tide Have you said what you needed to? Stay if you want to Guess you’ve said what you needed to You could have stayed if you wanted to

It might make more sense in the morning I’m too tired to keep on ignoring All that keeps holding me down So I’ll take out these rocks that are weighing me here In amongst all of your memory It’s the right way forward from now It’ll take me a bit but I’ll meet someone And I don’t know yet when that time will come I’m opening to the thought of it And I’ll take the hit that the ocean brings As I reach the top from the depths beneath I’m done sinking Yeah I’d rather swim I can’t do much more here so I’m going I’m too wired from all of this talking Thanks though, for having me round I can drive my way home down that new coastal road My windows are down, this never gets old It’s the right way forward for now It’ll take me a bit but I’ll meet someone And I don’t know yet when that time will come I’m opening to the thought of it And I’ll take the hit that the ocean brings As I reach the top from the depths beneath I’m done sinking Yeah I’d rather swim Well I believe I believe in something more Than what we live Cause what the hell are we living for If not to breathe? If not to get up and go? Cause I believe, yeah I believe in something more I believe I believe in something more Than what we live Cause what the hell are we living for?

The morning light It’s all blue off-whites and running us ahead It’s quite a sight for sorer eyes that are trying to express The way I feel I struggle to tell you And I know I’ve got some work to do Open up the sails to the wind and test your shoulders Pull the rope; a little tighter grip, your hands can hold us This gust of courage is all it takes To stack all the pieces that we’d created And I realize that there’s only so much air So I decided that I’m gonna take a breath We lost sight of the shoreline Can’t find home so we divide A warning sign I’ve taken to this ship and its departments Now I know that the tide can pull the currents that’ll guide us But I will not break this mould I’ve shaped And I confuse the things I’ve chased And I realize that there’s only so much air So I decided that I’m gonna take a breath We lost sight of the shoreline Can’t find home so we divide What could I tell you? Are you ready to choose? It’ll be over soon No, didn’t want Didn’t want this Who? Who are you? Holding onto the noose No, didn’t want, didn’t want this

What you wanted What you needed wasn’t clear Did I cause it? Did I push you there? Well I’m not perfect but neither are the times So now I’ll pocket all of what you were And I’m under your skin I’m in the bit between what’s in and out What’s upside down And I’m feeling the sting If there’s an itch I’m in it now I’ll scratch my way out What you wanted is what you’d never find At least I’m honest in all that hides Well I’m not sure that you’d even tried Cause all I got was half a real goodbye Well I’m under your skin I’m in the bit between what’s in and out What’s upside down And I’m feeling the sting If there’s an itch I’m in it now I’ll scratch my way out And I’m under your skin I’m in the bit between what’s in and out What’s upside down And I’m feeling the sting If there’s an itch I’m in it now I’ll scratch my way out And I’m under your skin I’m in the bit between what’s in and out What’s upside down And I’m feeling the sting If there’s an itch I’m in it now I’ll scratch my way out And I’m under your skin I’m in the bit between what’s in and out What’s upside down And I’m feeling the sting If there’s an itch I’m in it now I’ll scratch my way out

What you took from me Is was what you were meant to leave We owe our history To call it for what it is Is it the life you needed One where I’m not in it Oh how we’d grow like the trees did But some don’t bear the leaves I’m down, far down Good things will come ‘round But not now, not right now Good things will come ‘round This future can look up If you lift your head unstuck I don’t know which road I’ll take But I’ll make my way through it Keep out of those cliches But know your distance stings Go easy and be direct Let’s see what’s coming next I’m down, far down Good things will come ‘round But not now, not right now But good things will come ‘round They’re coming ‘round They’re coming ‘round Good things will come ‘round They’re coming ‘round They’re coming ‘round They’re coming ‘round They’re coming ‘round They’re coming ‘round They’re coming ‘round This future can look up If you lift your head unstuck (they’re coming ‘round) I don’t know which road I’ll take But I’ll make my way through it

about

Hayden Calnin strikes a balance between acoustic folk eloquence and otherworldly production on his emotionally resonant and sonically rich 2023 EP, 'A Turning of the Tide: Side B'. Over the years, the Australian singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has released projects at a prolific pace, while sharing stages with the likes of Matt Corby, Tom Odell, and The Antlers, and his music has been featured on a slew of TV series and movie soundtracks, including the UK trailer for the Acadamy Award-nominated film Room. He also co-wrote “Falling Up” for Dean Lewis and has produced on records for Didirri, Harrison Storm, Riley Pearce, and more.

At the top of 2022 and in the wake of a breakup, he left Melbourne for a creative hideaway in Rye Ocean Beach to write this record. He absorbed the inspiration of his surroundings and composed on acoustic guitar. Ultimately, Hayden comes out of isolation with an ability to connect more than ever. “When you hear this, I’d love for you to smile. I’m probably the happiest I’ve ever been right now. I’m comfortable with where I’m at and where I’m heading for the first time in years. I hope the music shows.”
