Hayden Calnin strikes a balance between acoustic folk eloquence and otherworldly production on this emotionally resonant and sonically rich set of recordings. Over the years, the Australian singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has released projects at a prolific pace, while sharing stages with the likes of Matt Corby, Tom Odell, and The Antlers, and his music has been featured on a slew of TV series and movie soundtracks, including the UK trailer for the Acadamy Award-nominated film Room. He also co-wrote “Falling Up” for Dean Lewis and has produced on records for Didirri, Harrison Storm, Riley Pearce, and more.
At the top of 2022 and in the wake of a breakup, he left Melbourne for a creative hideaway in Rye Ocean Beach to create his album. He absorbed the inspiration of his surroundings and composed on acoustic guitar. Ultimately, Hayden comes out of isolation with an ability to connect more than ever. Of "I Believe in Something More", he shares, "it's about adjusting to a new living environment and pulling yourself out of a dark time to do so."
lyrics
It might make more sense in the morning
I’m too tired to keep on ignoring
All that keeps holding me down
So I’ll take out these rocks that are weighing me here
In amongst all of your memory
It’s the right way forward from now
It’ll take me a bit but I’ll meet someone
And I don’t know yet when that time will come
I’m opening to the thought of it
And I’ll take the hit that the ocean brings
As I reach the top from the depths beneath
I’m done sinking
Yeah I’d rather swim
I can’t do much more here so I’m going
I’m too wired from all of this talking
Thanks though, for having me round
I can drive my way home down that new coastal road
My windows are down, this never gets old
It’s the right way forward for now
It’ll take me a bit but I’ll meet someone
And I don’t know yet when that time will come
I’m opening to the thought of it
And I’ll take the hit that the ocean brings
As I reach the top from the depths beneath
I’m done sinking
Yeah I’d rather swim
Well I believe
I believe in something more
Than what we live
Cause what the hell are we living for
If not to breathe?
If not to get up and go?
Cause I believe, yeah I believe in something more
I believe
I believe in something more
Than what we live
Cause what the hell are we living for?
